 AMMAN — Some 1.9 million passengers travelled through Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) during the first three months of the year (Q1-2019), according to a statement sent to The Jordan Times on Thursday.

 The Airport International Group (AIG) said in the statement that these figures mark a 6.1 per cent increase, compared to the same duration in 2018.

 While cargo movement via QAIA had dropped by 8.4 per cent in the comparative span to 22,608 tonnes, aircraft movements increased by 6.9 per cent, the statement underlined.

 In March, 676,447 passengers travelled through QAIA, via 6,162 flights, indicating a 4.6 and 5.3 per cent increase, respectively, in the year-to-date figures, the AIG stated.

 However, QAIA handled 8,442 tonnes of cargo in March, down 7.5 per cent of the March figures a year ago.

 Overall, “2019 is off to a great start with passenger numbers showing a steady increase, driven largely by travels to/from QAIA to Erbil, Doha, Cairo, Istanbul and Antalya as the top five destinations during the first quarter,” said Kjeld Binger, CEO of AIG.

 He thanked the stakeholders and employees of the QAIA and AIG for their hard work and expressed positive outlook into the future.

 “This achievement was made possible thanks to the hard work, dedication and commitment of our team and stakeholders, and we look forward to seeing these efforts come to fruition for the remainder of the year,” Binger said.

 AIG is “a Jordanian company that harnesses the airport management and construction expertise of regional and international partners in order to rehabilitate, expand and operate Jordan’s premier gateway, QAIA”, the statement said.

 The group was awarded a 25-year build-operate-transfer concession in 2007 by the government after an open global tender overseen by the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation.
